Accumulators: True Probability vs Headline Odds
Why bookmakers love accumulators, how the margin compounds, and when a multi actually offers genuine value.
How accumulators work
Odds multiply. 4 legs × 2.00 = 16.00.
The margin problem
If each leg carries a 4% operator margin, a 4-leg accumulator's total margin becomes ~17%. An 8-leg parlay exceeds 30%.
That's why expected value almost always drops as legs increase.
When accumulators make sense
- Combining bets each carrying positive individual EV.
- Low-margin markets (Asian handicap, totals).
- Entertainment with a small flat stake.
When they don't
- Long-odds parlays chasing a "life-changing" ticket.
- Combining correlated outcomes in the same match (most operators block them).
Insurance / cash out
Great for the operator, rarely for the bettor. Usually removes 5-15% of EV.
