Value Betting: Spotting Mispriced Odds
What value means, how to compute expected value, how to line-shop across operators, and why closing line value is the gold-standard benchmark.
Definition of value
Value = when the true probability is higher than the odds imply. Example: you estimate 50% for an event and the operator offers 2.20 (implying 45.5%). You have a 4.5% edge.
Expected Value (EV)
EV = (Win probability × Net profit) − (Loss probability × Stake).
Positive EV → profitable long term.
Line shopping
Compare the same market across 3-5 operators. Small odds differences (1.95 vs 2.05) drastically change long-term ROI.
Closing Line Value (CLV)
Took odds at 2.20 and the market closed at 2.00? You hit CLV +10%. Consistently beating closing lines means long-term profitability even when individual bets lose.
Practical tips
- Bet early when you expect the market to move in your favour.
- Avoid high-margin markets (Asian handicap usually beats 1X2).
- Keep a log with odds taken vs closing odds.
